A group of vets discuss a patient
The founding member of the ABVA, and president from 1987-1999, was John Nicol who, after undertaking a human course in acupuncture, was interested in applying this knowledge in the veterinary field.

By 1984, there was sufficient interest in veterinary acupuncture to support the formation of a group of like-minded individuals. In 1985, at a meeting John arranged in London, it was decided to form the Association of British Veterinary Acupuncture.

This small nucleus of interested veterinary surgeons continued to partake in a series of meetings, seminars and practical 'teach-ins', with speakers from BMAS (British Medical Acupuncture Society) and from overseas.

In September 1987, the ABVA was formed. John was President, Jill Adair Secretary and the late Robert Allpress Treasurer. By 1995, the committee had expanded to include several council members. John and his wife Margaret were a driving force during this time. Many excellent meetings and practical sessions continued.

During 1997, thanks to the combined efforts of Wendy Vere and Mark Elliott, the first IVAS recognised training course was held at the University of Exeter. The course moved in 2000 to a larger venue at the University of Bristol's Langford Vet School, where there was access to excellent conference and practical facilities. Onno Weiringa was course organiser and ABVA President during this time.

The ABVA owes a debt of gratitude to all those who have given so generously of their time and commitment to the establishment of veterinary acupuncture in the UK.
